Concrete batch plants combine sand and stone from Mawsons’ quarries with cement, water and specialist additives, which are then mixed and delivered to construction sites in agitator trucks. Mawsons’ concrete batch plants are strategically located to serve our region. Depending on demand there can be up to 10 agitator trucks and 15 people working at a Mawsons’ concrete plant. Jobs include truck and front-end loader drivers, batchers (who select ingredients, manage raw material supply and operate the plant), transport co-ordinators and managers. In smaller plants these roles are shared amongst multi-skilled teams of 2 or 3 people. Some Mawsons’ concrete plants also offer a range of landscaping products for direct sale or delivery in smaller tip trucks.

Stone for concrete, road and railway construction, asphalt, erosion control, dams and landscaping applications is sourced from Mawsons extensive quarry network. Many different types of stone are quarried. Hard rock, such as basalt, diabase, hornfels and granite is drilled and blasted using explosives. Gravel and sand are dug directly from the ground using excavators. Once extracted the stone material is crushed and screened to meet Australian Standard specifications for each particular product. Blending and wet mixing plants at Mawsons’ quarries ensure optimum product performance while recycling by-products and minimising any waste.
Quarry equipment is typically large. Mawsons use dump trucks that carry loads of between 30 and 60 tonnes. The largest front-end loaders at Mawsons’ quarries can fit small cars in their buckets and excavators weigh between 25 and 75 tonnes. There is also specialised equipment such as rock drills and hydraulic hammers that work in the pits to win the stone. Some quarries have crushers and screens that are permanent, others use mobile crushers and screens that travel between quarry sites as customer needs dictate.
Our quarries rely on skilled people of all ages and genders to perform a range of roles; mobile and fixed plant operators, drill and blast surveyors, mechanics, fitters and welders, transport co-ordinators and despatch staff combine as a tight to keep each quarry humming.
Mawsons operate quarries, not mines; mines often use chemicals to extract and refine minerals. There is no chemical processing at Mawson quarries.

There are lots of machines at Mawsons; small and large, electric, diesel and petrol powered. Each piece of equipment has to be well maintained to ensure its safe and efficient operation. This is where the mechanics and maintenance teams play a critical role.
Mechanics and maintenance staff are based across the business, many are kept busy in the main workshops at Cohuna, Griffith and Leeton. These workshops are equipped with modern tools and undertake all sorts of repair and rebuild work. Mobile mechanics and welders also visit production sites to carry out maintenance, repairs and plant upgrades.
A specialist team of plant design engineers and project managers undertake the planning, design and construction for much of the plant upgrade work that Mawsons are constantly undertaking, often at several sites at once.

The products Mawsons supply must be durable, safe and able to do what they are expected to do. A team of civil engineers, specialised laboratory technicians and material testers are based in NATA Certified Materials Testing Facilities in Echuca and Griffith, at major quarries and concrete plants across Mawsons’ business. These people are continually refining concrete mix designs and testing concrete and quarry products against a very wide range of criteria to ensure specifications are comfortably met. Assessing new products and production techniques forms an important part of the Technical Teams’ work as Mawsons continue to keep abreast of the latest, most efficient building technologies.
-
Mawsons operational divisions are supported by specialist financial, IT, Human Resources and Work Health and Safety practitioners. These people play critical roles in managing the company’s finances and ensuring that the needs of our most important asset, our people, are well managed. The skills, experience and qualifications in these areas vary from home-grown experience to tertiary qualified staff who have lived experience in all sorts of businesses beyond concrete and quarries.
Offices with training facilities in Cohuna, Echuca, Bendigo, Leeton and Griffith are designed to make sure that the expert help of a specialist support person is never out of reach of an operator or manager at any Mawsons’ plant.
-
On the roads Mawsons operate a large fleet of modern concrete trucks (agitators), tip trucks and cement tankers. This equipment provides the delivery services that link our supply sources to our customers’ construction sites. The work of concrete and quarry delivery drivers might take them to remote highways, farmer’s tracks, along rivers or across valleys. Rarely are two days the same for Mawsons’ drivers who are always in contact with their home base and manager via the satellite communication systems that are installed in each vehicle.
